What are neuro-affirming editorial services?

Having a neurodivergent brain is a beautiful thing, especially for writers: We are fonts of creativity, we think in non-traditional ways, and we make connections across time and space.

But being neurodivergent comes with difficulties as well: We can be more sensitive to criticism and rejection. We can have difficulty processing information or communicating our thoughts. We can find it challenging to start tasks and to follow through with projects.

Neuro-affirming editing approaches the writer-editor relationship with an understanding and an appreciation for all the gifts and challenges of neurodivergence. I get it because I myself am AuDHD. So, not only can I celebrate you in all your gifts, I can support you in your struggles as well. I can also tailor my approach to your unique needs, affirming your ND identity as valid and safe.

This means you can:

  1. Have your writing assessed in an accepting, non-judgemental environment where you can safely express your needs—without worrying that you’re giving me too much context or not enough eye contact.

  2. Work with an editor (me!) who values clear, kind, direct communication, so there’s no ambiguity, and with whom you can unmask, if desired

  3. Communicate via your preferred method (email, phone, or video).

  4. Choose your feedback format based on how you best process information

    • For those who need to know WHY, I can give feedback with detailed explanations

    • If you’re overwhelmed by too much information, I can pare it back to just the actionable essentials

    • I can give examples, or not, depending on how you best absorb information

    • Reports are clearly organized and notes can be color coded

  5. Receive gentle reminders or check-ins if requested.

I also offer:

  1. Body doubling, writers groups, and workshops for ND creatives, to build community and bring ND creatives together.

  2. One-on-one coaching to support you through your writing journey.

  3. Strategies and suggestions on writing with typical ND traits like executive dysfunction and rejection sensitivity dysphoria, based on lived experience and discussions with other ND writers.

  4. Compiled resources for neurodivergent writers and resources for indie publishing; I’ve done the research so that you don’t have to

If you know of a way I can best support you, tell me about it. I want to facilitate the best experience for you and your needs.

My goal is to help you communicate your authentic voice to your audience. Do you need support with your writing? Contact me at rachel@authenticselfeditorial.com.
